Edelrid: Over 150 Years of Alpine Expertise
EDELRID was founded by Julius EDELmann and Carl RIDder in 1863.
They started out making braided ropes and cords. Julius Edelmann was a salesman and mountaineer, Carl Ridder a technician, who specialized in braiding machines. Together, they formed a formidable team and remain an innovative and creative company to this day.
In 1953 EDELRID invented the kernmantel rope and revolutionized the world of climbing. Materials and production techniques were constantly improved and then 11 years later, EDELRID produced a rope capable of withstanding multiple falls – the forerunner of the modern dynamic climbing rope. Climbing hasn’t looked the same since.
They were also responsible for the first climbing harness on the market – a chest harness – and then developed the first seat harness which paved the way for the revolution in climbing in the 1970s.
As of today, more than 60 percent of their production still takes place in Germany, while placing special care on the environment and good labor practices. This led them to become the first rope manufacturer and mountain specialist to earn the Bluesign label in 2009. The entire manufacturing process is certified, from the selection of the materials to the production and sale.
Nowadays, Edelrid offers a wide range of other mountain and climbing products and continue to excel as manufacturers. Their line of products now also include: ice axes, crampons, belaying devices, canyoning gear (they are pioneers for this activity), helmets, carabiners, via ferrata materials and more.
Edelrid has more than 150 year of experience, providing safety gear to mountaineers and climbers, as well as innovating the industry. This is evident in the high quality production of their products.
